Attitudes and laws toward the hemp and cannabis extract CBD, medical marijuana, and recreational marijuana are changing at a fast pace throughout much of the United States. Just within the last few weeks, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York has announced that he has a working group assigned with writing a bill to legalize marijuana in the State of New York. In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy continues to work with the New Jersey Legislature to come up with a bill to legalize recreational marijuana in the Garden State. Murphy campaigned on a promise to get marijuana legalized in NJ citing the economic benefits to the state through taxes as well as for the purpose of criminal justice fairness. Murphy has made New Jersey’s medical marijuana policy much less restrictive and affordable. Unlike under previous NJ Governor Chris Christie, the program was limited and prohibitively expensive for many citizens. Medical marijuana is expanding under Governor Tom Wolf in Pennsylvania. There are movements toward potential legalization in Oklahoma and movements towards expansion of medical marijuana in Florida and Mississippi, as well as other states. Legalization is coming soon in Massachusetts while Maine is moving toward legalization too. In Canada, where recreational marijuana is expected soon, the Molson Coors Brewing Co. is embarking on a joint venture with Hydropothecary Corp to create cannabis-infused beverages. Even some former politicians are taking advantage of business opportunities on the horizon as a result of changing cannabis laws. Ex-Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner and former Massachusetts Governor William Weld have joined the Board of marijuana company Acreage Holdings and within the past few weeks former New Jersey Governor Jim Florio has joined the advisory board of marijuana edibles company, Nuka Enterprises of Colorado, a firm that expects to expand into New Jersey when legalization happens there.

And as the laws change from state to state with more states going legal on the horizon, many celebrities are getting involved in the marijuana business including Tommy Chong from the comedy team Cheech and Chong, singer Willie Nelson with his brand called ‘Willie’s Reserve’, Snoop Dog with brand ‘Leafs by Snoop’, The Estate of musician Bob Marley, which raised $200 million to fund its’ marketing efforts in Canada, Whoopi Goldberg, Singer Melissa Etheridge, former boxing heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and others.
