Consumers looking for non-traditional forms of pain relief can now purchase CBD oil and other hemp products at a local CVS Pharmacy or online.

CVS locations in California and 7 other states – a total of 800 drugstores – are now selling hemp-derived CBD products that deliver measured doses of CBD oil in topical forms including soaps, lotions, sprays, creams, roll-ons and hair dressing.

The 7 other states are: Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland and Tennessee, according to NBC News.

If your state is not included on the list, you can purchase hemp products online here.

Cannabidiol oil (CBD) is a non-intoxicating marijuana extract that is credited with treating a variety of ailments including epileptic seizures in children, anxiety, inflammation and insomnia.

Cannabidiol oil is extracted from the flowers and buds of hemp plants. It does not cause an intoxicating effect, or marijuana’s “high” which is caused by tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

CVS has an answer for health experts who say CBD products are unregulated by the government, and therefore carry dangerous risks.

CVS Health spokesman Mike DeAngelis told USA TODAY the company will work together with a lab to test the products to verify the quality of CBD content.

DeAngelis says CVS will not sell edible CBD products such as cookies, cupcakes or brownies, but a hemp crunch bar, raw hemp seeds and hemp oatmeal are only available in select stores.

CVS was motivated to carry the hemp products after hearing from consumers.

“Anecdotally, we’ve heard from our customers that have used those products that, gee, it’s helped with pain relief for arthritis and other ailments,” CVS CEO Larry Merlo said in a CNBC interview. “We’re going to walk slowly, but we think this is something customers are going to be looking for as part of the health offering.”
